WORKSHOP: VOICE and IMPROVISATION
29 and 30 April 2017 11:00 to 17:00
Margaret will lead this course with Kate Hilder, performer, Action Theatre (TM) teacher and Feldenkrais trainer CLICK HERE.
Exploring our voices can be a doorway to words and language. We will discover how connecting with the sources from which we produce vocal sound and listening to the qualities and musicality of our voice can generate narrative content.
Kate and Margaret will teach in tandem starting each day with a physical and vocal warm-up followed by solo, duet and small group improvisations. Margaret will then lead a session centering on vocal work which arises from these improvisations, including short individual guidance. At other times we will start with vocal improvising and then explore movement and mood to fill out the different characters which emerge.
This workshop is open to participants interested in the Roy Hart approach to developing the range of vocal expression and who already have some experience of voice and body work.
Cost: £150 (or £130 if a £50 deposit received before 3rd April.)

VOICE–BODY INTENSIVE (Intermediate/Advanced Level)
6 day residential Workshop - 36 hours
in a wild and beautiful setting
at the Hameau de l'Etoile (Nr Montpellier)
(website CLICK HERE)
This workshop is open to participants interested in the Roy Hart approach to developing the range of vocal expression and who have some experience of voice and body work.
Margaret will lead this workshop with Neil Paris (ex – Fabulous Beast performer; teacher and director).
Guided by these two very experienced and supportive teachers, participants in this workshop will explore and develop awareness of the dynamic sources of the voice in the body and the imagination.
ROY HART voice work offers a way to experience and develop a deeper connection to your own unique vocal potential. Because vocal sound has its source in the body as well as in the world of our emotions, play and movement can often unexpectedly free up vocal possibilities that lie hidden and unexpressed.
In the mornings we will focus in two smaller groups, on individual voices and on movement. Then in the afternoons altogether, on group improvisation, play and the development of individual themes including work on texts or singing songs.
Full board and lodging must be booked separately at the Hameau de l'Etoile, prices starting from 65€ per night. Participants will then be able to relax between classes in a beautiful, wild setting, enjoying comfortable accommodation, excellent food (full board) and unlimited use of the large swimming pool. (Having this time and space to absorb the day's work, can be particularly helpful on such an intensive course.)

Neil is a director, performer, teacher and artistic director of SMITHdancetheatre CLICK HERE
From 2003-2010 he toured internationally with Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre (www.fabulousbeast.net), where he met Margaret Pikes and led company classes and vocal development. He has taught throughout the UK and Europe and has been working with Margaret Pikes since 2005. In this work Neil uses dance, theatre and yoga practices to explore imaginative ways of making connections and pathways through the body to the voice. He combines playful exercises designed to free the body and spark the imagination with disciplined quiet practices that connect us with our breathing and our own unique interior worlds.
"Thanks so much for a wonderful week of expression and exploration! I really loved it. I really appreciated the close listening that you give all your students, and the embodied active and highly personal approach to voice work. ..... I feel deeply and personally affected by the work, inspired, reminded of what matters to me, and moved in a subconscious world that threw up many dreams connected to my own creative journey and obstacles." 2016 Becca Savory-Fuller, Performer / PhD researcher (University Exeter)/ Teacher.
"I would recommend this workshop to everybody who is curious and wants to discover a new horizon of voice, body and soul."
Judith Bach, Performer Website.
"The workshop was both practical-down-to-earth and inspiring. Such an experience reflects the high level of teaching. Although the classes are taught in groups, each student receives feedback and encouragement to match their individual journey of discovery. I also learned as much or even more from comments to other students as from those directed to me. When I needed it, I was given time and space to explore and at appropriate times I received the gentle encouragement to break out of my comfort zone and take my work to the next level. I cannot recommend this workshop highly enough." 2015 Stephen Berwind, PhD MFA Senior Lecturer in Drama Manchester Metropolitan University-Cheshire.
"A wonderful week of vocal and physical exploration at Le Hameau. Thank you for all your hard work, care, generosity and the very high level of both group and individual teaching. And with such a brilliant group of people too. I had quite a few personal vocal revelations and the journey continues of course.." 2014 Jane Vicary, Assistant Head of Voice, Alra North UK.
“ The course was one of those few times in the process of creative work that is marked as a key crossroads. In my 30 or so years of learning within creative practise this course goes down as one of those epiphany moments. I feel it has enhanced my development both as a teacher and as an artist. Thank you. The quality of teaching was of a very high standard with close attention to one to one and good group work that offered different levels of learning. Beautiful location and lovely food. Perfect.” C.W. 2013
